Moldova condemns upcoming elections in DPR and LPR

In a statement published on its website, the Moldovan Foreign Ministry condemned the forthcoming elections in the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics.

“The Republic of Moldova reaffirms its strong support for the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine within internationally recognized borders and joins the United States, EU countries, Canada, and UN member states, condemning the intention of the so-called DPR and LPR to organize “elections” on November 11th, 2018,” the statement reads.

The ministry stressed that the elections in the self-proclaimed republic contradict Ukrainian legislation and undermine the implementation of the Minsk agreements.

“The Republic of Moldova welcomes the extension of the law on the special status of the regions in the east of Ukraine by the Verkhovna Rada and call on all sides to fully implement the Minsk agreement on a cease-fire and the withdrawal of armored weaponry from the line of contact,” the statement reads.

Elections for the heads and deputies of the DPR and the LPR are scheduled for November 11th. Ukraine has promised not to recognize the voting results.
