Lutsenko: Saakashvili will not be expelled from Ukraine over incident at Shehyni border checkpoint

Prosecutor General of Ukraine Yuri Lutsenko has made assurances that Mikheil Saakashvili, leader of the party "Movement of New Forces" (Rukh Novykh Syl) and former head of the Odessa regional administration, will not be expelled from Ukraine and will not be arrested in connection with the incident at the Shehyni border checkpoint.

"As Prosecutor General, I tell you clearly: Saakashvili will not be arrested in relation to this case, [and] Saakashvili cannot be extradited from this country while he has a permanent residence certificate [and] other documents that he has submitted," the Prosecutor General said at the YES forum in Kyiv on Saturday.

At the same time, the Prosecutor General added: "Those who smuggled him across the border will have problems with a criminal case, but will not be arrested. Those who beat the Ukrainian border guards will have to deal with criminal proceedings and will be arrested, and must be sentenced for seven years so that all politicians remember - one can hold meetings, even if necessary, but you cannot beat the servecemen who defend the Ukrainian border! "

On September 10, the former head of the Odessa Regional State Administration, Mikheil Saakashvili, broke through the Polish-Ukrainian border with the support of activists.
