Italian Foreign Ministry: We do not recognize the annexation of the Crimea

The Italian government recognizes international law and supports the sanctions policy of the European Union, which is why it does not recognize Russia’s annexation of the Crimea, stated Italian Foreign Minister Enzo Moavero Milanesi during a parliamentary session, Ansa news agency reports.

“The government respects the rules of international law. Italy did not recognize regional authorities appointed in March 2014 following the EU sanctions,” Milanesi said in response to left wing MP Laura Boldrini’s comments regarding statements about the Crimea and Ukraine that were made by the leader of the right wing Northern League party and Interior Minister Matteo Salvini.

Salvini had recently expressed his strong belief that Russia had annexed the Crimea legally and that the Ukrainian Revolution of Dignity was “fake.”
