Hungary calls for sending OSCE mission to Zakarpattia Oblast of Ukraine

Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó called on the Council of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe to send a mission of observers to Zakarpattia, as reported on the website of the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“Hungary was previously an adherent of Ukraine, but the September law on education, which significantly reduced the rights of minorities to study in their native languages, has become a source of great disappointment. The law is completely incompatible with Ukraine’s bilateral and international obligations,” said Szijjártó.

He also said that Hungary is concerned about the situation in Zakarpattia, where about 150 ,000 Hungarians live.

“Zakarpattia is a multi-ethnic territory, and the new legislation in the field of education does not promote peaceful cohabitation in the region. Therefore, Hungary requests the sending of OSCE observers for a long-term period,” said Szijjártó.

In September, the Hungarian Foreign Minister in Brussels called on Ukraine to repeal the “discriminatory” law on education.
