Hungary agrees to redefine position of the commissioner for Transcarpathia after Ukraine’s protest

Hungary has made a decision to change the name of the position of the ministerial commissioner for Transcarpathia after Ukraine’s protest, said Ukrainian Minister of Foreign Affairs Pavlo Klimkin.

“The morning began with a conversation with my Hungarian counterpart Péter Szijjártó. Hungarians understood us and will change the name of their commissioner for Transcarpathia. We continue constructive work on all the other issues,” he wrote on his Twitter page.

In the summer of 2018, the Hungarian government established a post of the ministerial commissioner for the development of Transcarpathian region and appointed Ishtvan Grezha for this position. Ukraine called this decision "an interference with Ukraine’s internal affairs and an encroachment on its territorial integrity".

In a commentary to Interfax-Ukraine, Vasily Bodnar, Deputy Foreign Minister of Ukraine said that the Foreign Ministry is forced to react sharply to Hungary's actions in order to prevent the Hungarian side from further possibilities of "treating Transcarpathia as its own region."
