Chubarov: freeing of Umerov and Chiygoz is not a concession but Russia’s implementation of the demands of UN courts
The People's Deputy of Ukraine and Chairman of Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people, Refat Chubarov said during a press briefing on Wednesday, October 25 that the release of Ilmi Umerov and Akhtem Chiygoz relates to the decision of the International Court of Justice.
"There is no concession on the part of Putin. This is a partial fulfillment by them of the decision they cannot fail to fulfill. It is the interim decision of the International Court of Justice from April 2017 on two conventions regarding the lawsuit by Ukraine: to restore the activities of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people, to abolish the ban against it, to provide an opportunity for the leadership and members of the Mejlis to return to the Crimea and to release members of the Mejlis who are political prisoners. These should have been done right away," Chubarov said.
According to the head of the Mejlis, Russia can afford to continue making such steps to cover up its failure to fulfill its international obligations.
On October 25, the Russian authorities of the Crimea released the Deputies of the Mejlis, Ilmi Umerov and Akhtem Chiygoz and sent them to Turkey by plane.
