Ukraine urges the UN to exclude Crimean data from Russia’s climate reports

The Ukrainian delegation at the conference on climate change in Bonn called on the UN to exclude from Russian reports the data taken from the Crimea, as reported by Climate Home News portal.

As reported, the Ukrainian delegates accused Russia and the UN of violating international laws by publishing the climate reports, which include the data on greenhouse gases from the Crimean peninsula. Ukraine was supported by the US, Australia, and Canada.

"We ask the Secretariat [of the UN] not to post on its website any document which might be construed as the recognition of any change in status [of the Crimea]," Climate Home News quoted the representative of Ukraine as saying.

The delegation of Ukraine noted that the simple availability of the documents on the UN portal "should be considered as a further violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine and the violation of fundamental norms and principles of international law.”

In turn, the Russian delegation accused Ukraine of politicizing the UN Convention’s work on climate change. Home Climate News reports that the UN did not reply to the question of whether they would respond to the Ukrainian complaint.

The United Nations Climate Change Conference is being held in Bonn from April 30 to May 10.
