US State Department confirms sale of weapons to Ukraine
RIA Novosti reports that US State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert has stated that Washington decided to supply defensive weapons to Ukraine to ensure the protection of its territorial integrity and sovereignty.
"The United States has decided to provide Ukraine with enhanced defensive capabilities as part of our efforts to help Ukraine build its long-term defensive capabilities to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity, and to deter further aggression," Nauert said in a statement.
"The US assistance is entirely defensive in nature, and as we have always said, Ukraine is a sovereign state and has a right to defend itself," the State Department official said.
US media earlier reported that the administration of US President Donald Trump had approved the sale of lethal defensive weapons to Ukraine, with the exception of Javelin anti-tank missiles. Information later appeared that Trump intends to approve a plan for selling the anti-tank missiles to Kyiv.
