US Republicans called on Obama to impose sanctions against Russia for violating the Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces Treaty
Chairmen from two committees of the US House of Representatives wrote a letter to the president of the United States asking him to impose sanctions against Russia for violating the treaty between the United States and the Russian Federation on the elimination of their intermediate-range and shorter-range missiles, and also to take reciprocal military steps.
Its authors are both republican: Chairman of the House Committee on Armed Services Mac Thornberry and Chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence Devin Nunes. The legislators stated that neither the US State Department nor the US Department of Defense have taken measures against the Russian Federation, despite the fact that the United States accused Russia of testing intermediate-range, ground-launched cruise missiles in 2014.
In addition, Congress has adopted a law providing for a US response to violations of the Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces Treaty. In this regard, Thornberry and Nunes have called on Obama to impose severe economic sanctions against Russia and take reciprocal military steps. They also advise a refusal to extend the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty.
The Russian Federation and the United States are currently accusing each other of violating the treaty on the elimination of intermediate-range and shorter-range missiles.
