Ukraine's Permanent Representative to the UN: the normal relations between Russia and the US are unlikely

Ukraine’s Ambassador to the UN, Volodymyr Yelchenko, expressed his opinion on why the US has not reached any deals with Russia. He stated in his interview to Apostrophe news web site that American officials have changed their opinion of “Russia’s behavior”.

“And when the new American officials, who started to deal with the Russian issue, read information in the media which they had not seen until now, and they saw Russia’s behavior before and now, many of them, I think, changed their opinion quite drastically,” he noted, answering a question on whether the hopes of Russia for “a big deal” with the US were justified.

According to Yelchenko, the whole world is interested in the US and Russia establishing normal relations. He believes that this could help resolve the situation in Ukraine.

“But, alas, nobody understands better than the Ukrainians what the Russian Federation is like. And there is no reason to hope that suddenly, in a day or a month’s time, all of their psychology will change and they will be different,” the Ukrainian Ambassador said.

According to Yelchenko, the realization of the real situation will very quickly cause American politicians to make a “sound assessment” of Russia’s role in the world.

“I’m not saying that I want this, and for me it definitely is not good for the US and Russia to be enemies, because others will also suffer because of this. But, unfortunately, it must be acknowledged that today there is little reason for normal trusting relations to be established between the US and Russia,” the politician said.
