Ukraine and Poland to begin construction of new gas pipeline in 2017

Ukrainian and Polish gas transportation experts are working on the design for the construction of a new pipeline, as posted by the Press Secretary of Ukrtransgaz, Maxim Bilyavskiy, on his Facebook page.

"There will be a new pipeline between Ukraine and Poland; its commercial operation is planned for 2020", he said, adding that the construction of the pipeline will begin in 2017.

According to Bilyavskiy, in the process of constructing this pipeline, the advanced technology of horizontal directional drilling will be used, namely, when crossing water obstacles. This will allow the pipeline to bypass the reservoir through the layers of the earth's crust that is below its natural occurrence. This will maintain the sustainability of environment. Ukrtransgaz plans to use over 1,000 employees for the construction project.

In the process of preparing the feasibility study, three routes through Ukraine were considered. As a result, the construction of the 99.3km pipeline was approved.

As was previously reported, on the 17th of December 2014, the operators of the gas transportation system of Ukraine (Ukrtransgaz) and Poland (Gaz-System) signed an agreement, which provides for the construction of a gas pipeline between Poland and Ukraine. The estimated cost of the construction within Ukraine is at $245 million. It will allow to access LNG terminals in the Baltic Sea.

The anticipated volume of the new pipeline between Poland and Ukraine will be 21.9 million cubic meters per day (8 billion cubic meters per year against the current 1.5 billion cubic meters). In the opposite direction — from Ukraine to Poland — the volume will be 19.2 million cubic meters (7 billion cubic meters per year).
