The US will help Ukraine collect funds taken by Yanukovych

The United States and Ukraine will cooperate in the search for and return of funds stolen by the former President of Ukraine, Viktor Yanukovych and his inner circle. The Secretary of National Security and the Defense Council of Ukraine, Oleksandr Turchynov, discussed the issue during a meeting with the Acting Undersecretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, Adam Szubin.

Szubin expressed hope that there will be close cooperation between both countries on issues of counter-financing of terrorism and money laundering. The parties also discussed the introduction of sanctions against financial institutions that work in the occupied territories.

According to Szubin, the United States supports an extension of sanctions against Russia, especially taking into consideration the continuing aggression against Ukraine. “I believe that Ukraine is under extremely strong pressure, fighting with forces that try to destabilize the lives of people and the country,” he said, noting that the USA will continue to support Ukraine’s civilized choice.
