US Senate prepares a new bill against Russia

U.S. Senators began work on a bill that, according to their plan, should become an effective response to Russia’s actions in Ukraine and Syria, as well as Moscow’s attempts to influence the American elections.

"Russia is a major challenge for America,” said Senator Benjamin Louis Cardin. “They are not our partners.”

Cardin referred to Russia’s behavior in the world scene as “hooliganism." He reminded others that this year the USA accused Moscow of attempts at illegally penetrating computer systems including the database of the Democratic Party’s Presidential Candidate, Hillary Clinton who lost the elections to Republican Donald Trump.

"If it was an attack using a MiG or a computer mouse, in any case it’s still an attack,” Cardin stated. “This needs to be answered. They are obviously responsible for a cyber-attack on our country during recent elections.”

Cardin did not go into the details of the bill being prepared, noting that he plans to make a statement on November 17 in Washington regarding Russia’s policies. Answering a journalist’s question on whether the new bill would provide additional sanctions against the Russian Federation, the Senator said, "It will be comprehensive.”

As reported by Reuters, other lawmakers also called for actions against Russia. Cardin recognized that it would be difficult to adopt such a bill in the current legislature, which will complete its work at the end of this year. However, the legislator believes that such an initiative would be able to lay the foundation for future actions by the Senate and the House of Representatives. The United States Congress will start their work with new members in January next year.
