The Latvian Minister of Foreign Affairs condemned Russia’s aggression against Ukraine

Speaking at the UN Security Council, the Latvian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Edgars Rinkēvičs, condemned Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, saying it contradicts international standards and violates the principles of the UN Charter, Delfi reported.

Rinkēvičs emphasized in his speech that all UN Member States should respect the UN Charter and renounce the illegal use of force and threats. As for conflicts, all of them should be resolved peacefully.

Rinkēvičs also commended on the veto right saying that “concerning the veto right, the permanent members of the UN Security Council have the responsibility to exercise their veto right in the overall interests of peace and safety.” Edgars Rinkēvičs also congratulated António Guterres on his appointment as Secretary-General of the United Nations.

On December 29th, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine urged the U.N Member States to take steps to increase the pressure put on Russia, as it violated some key provisions of declarations and conventions in the field of human rights.
