President of Ukraine: US has promised to prevent the construction of Nord Stream 2
Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko thanked Secretary of State Rex Tillerson for cooperation in preventing the construction of the Nord Stream 2 project. The Head of State made a related statement on Sunday during a joint press conference with Tillerson in Kyiv.
"I'd like to particularly thank you for our cooperation in the energy sector, and its very important part in the prevention of the construction of the politically oriented Nord Stream 2 project," said Poroshenko.
Energy cooperation between Ukraine and the United States, according to the President, is expressed "through the purchase of American coal, in the construction of a plant for nuclear waste, in ensuring the supply of nuclear fuel to the Ukrainian Energoatom, and by providing US investment in the gas sector.”
The construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline is expected to begin in 2018 and be completed by the end of 2019. The 1220-km pipeline will run along the bottom of the Baltic Sea from the Russian coast to the coast of Germany. The capacity of each of the two lines is 27.5 billion cubic meters per year.
The new gas pipeline will double the capacity of the first Nord Stream, the route of which it will basically repeat.
