Polish Foreign Ministry accuses Russia of cyber-attack

The Polish Foreign Ministry has been attacked by hackers. The Ministry believes that the cybercrime was committed by Russian hackers, as reported by the Polish newspaper, Rzeczpospolita.

According to the newspaper, in December 2016, several employees of the Polish Foreign Ministry received an email which allegedly contained a message by NATO General Secretary, Jens Stoltenberg, regarding a meeting of the NATO Council on Russia. Opening the attachment led to the installation of the Trojan virus which allows the attackers to secretly gain access to the information of the Ministry.

The threat was successfully neutralized by Polish specialists.

Specialists from Poland believe that the hacker group ART 28, also known as Fancy Bear, is behind the attempt to install the Trojan virus on the computers of the Foreign Ministry. This group supposedly works under the guidance of the Russian Main Intelligence Directorate. Representatives of the same group are suspected of attacks on the OSCE and the World Anti-Doping agency, as well as the German Bundestag and NATO network, French TV channel TV5 Monde, and the government of Norway.
