Lutsenko: The leaders of the Ukrainian military made mistakes in Ilovaisk

The facts provided during the criminal proceedings regarding the events near Ilovaisk in August 2014, do not exclude possible mistakes by Ukrainian military leadership, as was stated by the Prosecutor General, Yuriy Lutsenko, on the Channel 1+1 on Thursday, 1 December.

"The investigation regarding the events at the Battle of Ilovaisk has been conducted, and indicates that the main and only factor that led to the deaths of Ukrainian servicemen, were the attacks mostly carried out by Russian Armed Forces. However, it does not exclude possible mistakes, perhaps even criminal acts by the Armed Forces of Ukraine," the General Prosecutor said.

Lutsenko said that according to Ukrainian military sources, 366 Ukrainian servicemen were killed near Ilovaisk in August 2014, and another 429 were injured.

The battles in Ilovaisk started two years ago, during the summer of 2014 on the eve of Independence Day, and again on 15 September, as stated by the Ukrainian Minister of Defense, in discussing the withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from Ilovaisk in the Donetsk region.
