Latvia installs 23 km fence along border with Russia

Latvian State Border Guards spokeswoman Evgeniya Poznyak announced the installation of a border fence 23 km in length between Russia and Latvia. The fence has been installed in order to prevent attempts to illegally enter Latvia, Delfi reported.

"The work on the construction of the fence began in 2015, and its completion is scheduled before 2019. Currently, a frontier 65 km long is laid out and a 23 km fence has been installed on the border," she said.

Poznyak also noted that EUR 6.3 million was allocated for the construction of border facilities in 2017. The funds will be used for constructing 60 km of fencing with a minimum height of 2.7 meters and for equipping the 150 km of frontier.

In general, on the Russian-Latvian border that is 276 km long, all strips that have no natural barriers are going to be fenced. This covers about 193 km of bare borderland.

Earlier it was reported that funds for equipping a frontier on the border with Belarus were built into Latvia’s budget for 2017.
