Kremlin would welcome Kissinger as mediator between Russia and U.S.
Commenting on reports that former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger may act as a mediator between Moscow and Washington under US President Donald Trump, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the decision is not up to Russia, but the Kremlin would welcome such an arrangement, TASS reported.
"No doubt, Kissinger is still one of the wisest politicians [and] experts who possesses, among other things, the most profound expert knowledge both in the sphere of Russian affairs and in the sphere of Russia-US relations," Peskov said.
"If his expert knowledge and the richest experience accumulated over decades somehow come to be needed, we would only welcome this,” the Kremlin spokesman added.
"But, of course, the need for and the use of this experience are not our business as this is the matter of US colleagues and we can’t interfere in this," he stressed.
The German newspaper Bild was the first to report that the 93-year-old Kissinger may act as a mediator between Moscow and Washington.
Kissinger, who was born in Germany, was US National Security Adviser from 1969 to 1975, and served as US Secretary of State from 1973 to 1977. The diplomat was one of the ideologists behind the policy of détente with the Soviet Union during the 1970s.
