Kerry: Brexit decision will not affect common agenda in Ukraine

US Secretary of State John Kerry stated that the UK’s decision to leave the European Union will not affect the overall common agenda that the US shares in Europe on the issue of Ukraine, according to a press release issued by the State Department.

Following a phone conversation with British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond, Kerry stated “the British are in no way departing from the principles and values that undergird the Transatlantic Partnership or from the important role the U.K. plays in promoting peace and stability in the world… Our two countries remain strong and vigilant NATO Allies, permanent members of the UN Security Council, commercial partners, and close friends.”

“I also want to reaffirm the U.S. commitment to the European Union and the common agenda we share with Europe on such issues as Ukraine, nuclear nonproliferation, climate change, trade, and human rights,” Kerry added.

The long-term consequences of the UK’s decision to leave the EU are still unclear, though it is generally thought that it will have a negative impact on Ukraine.

Yesterday, First Deputy Chairman of the Ukrainian Verkhovna Rada Irina Herashchenko stated that the Brexit decision will force the European Union to focus on internal matters, closing their eyes to everything else happening in the world.
