54,000 inhabitants of Belarus have paid the “tax on parasitism”.
As reported by the BelTA agency with reference to the republic’s ministry of tax and duties, 16.3 million Belarusian rubles were received into the national budget after the payment of duties (approximately $8.66 million US dollars).
The department noted that many citizens requested through the internet to be exempt from paying the tax due to being abroad.
Earlier the national tax authorities sent more than 470,000 notices about the tax payment.
Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko signed a decree to “prevent social dependency” in April 2015. Non-working citizens and foreigners with permanent residence in the country must pay an annual duty amounting to 20 base units (14,000 rubles). For failing to pay or not paying the tax on time, a fine or arrest for up to 15 days is planned.
Last week in Minsk more than 2,000 people came to protest against the law.
