EU condemns ban of Crimean Tatar Mejlis

The European External Action Service called the decision of the "prosecutoress" of Crimea an "attack on the rights of the Crimean Tatars."

The European External Action Service condemned the decision made by Natalia Poklonskaya on the suspension of the Mejlis activities, as stated on the official website of the Service on Thursday. Particularly, it was stated that the decision of Poklonskaya "constitutes a grave attack on the rights of the Crimean Tatars. The decision, taken in the context of the on-going court case aimed at banning its activities as an extremist organization, must be reversed immediately,” the statement read. It was also emphasized that the EU repeatedly reiterates its concerns about the deterioration of the human rights situation on the Crimean peninsula since it was annexed by Russia in 2014.

Persecution of persons belonging to minorities is particularly terrible.

As was reported, after the suspension of the Mejlis activities, its representatives are not allowed to use any state or municipal media, hold mass public events, use bank deposits or undertake any form of activity.
