Crimean Tatars urge the world’s countries to recognize the 1944 deportation as genocide
The World Congress of the Crimean Tatars sent an appeal to the governments of different countries, urging them to recognize the deportation of Crimean Tatars in 1944 as genocide, Crimean News reported.
“In an address of the Crimean Tatars World Congress, the mass deportation of Crimean Tatars in 1944 with the intended full destruction of this nation is classified as a crime that, according to international law, is genocide. Thus, Congress demands the governments of countries that received this appeal to recognize the events of 1944 as an act of genocide,” the edition noted.
The appeal was sent to authorities of approximately 300 countries of Europe, the United States, Latin America, Africa and member States of Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization. On the 12th of November 2015, Ukraine recognized the deportation of Crimean Tatars on May 18, 1944 as genocide. This information was also mentioned in the appeal.
