Crimean authorities: 400,000 people suffer from a shortage of water on the peninsula

The Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Crimea, Gennady Narayev, states that there are 400,000 Crimeans on the peninsula suffering from a shortage of drinking water, as reported on 1 February by TASS. The overall deficit in drinking water in the Crimea is about 300 million cubic meters per day when 1.2 billion cubic meters are required.

It is noted that the Eastern district of the peninsula is in a difficult situation where three reservoirs have been filled with water from the North-Crimean channel. In other districts of the Crimea, the water situation is not as concerning due to reservoirs being filled with water from rivers and natural rainfalls.

As was reported, in order to address the water shortage in the Nyzhnohirskyi district, 36 wells have been drilled and joined to three water withdrawal systems. Their overall flow rate is 195 thousand cubic meters, the statement reads.

After the annexation of the Crimea by Russia, Ukraine stopped the supply of water to the peninsula through the North-Crimean channel joining the Dnieper River with the peninsula. Ukraine met 85% of the Crimea’s fresh water needs through this channel.
