Committee of Voters of Ukraine: It is impossible to hold elections in the Donbas

Elections in the occupied regions of Donetsk and Luhansk will not happen for at least a few more years, as stated by the Chairman of the Committee of Voters of Ukraine, Oleksiy Koshel.

According to him, some reasons for this are the ongoing conflict, an armed population and a lack of a voter registry. “Another issue is that there may be expatriates who might decide to come back. They also have the right to vote. These issues first need to be resolved. Also, more than a year is needed to organize this process,” Koshel said while on air with Channel 5.

He added that the electoral process should be accompanied by a process of lustration, whereby government officials associated with Communism will be removed.

“The process of lustration is also imperative. This will apply to people who are involved in the elective process such as village council members and the mayor of the regional center. They should not have had to bear arms and they should not have spoken publicly against Kiev,” Koshel continued.

According to him, the lustration process will take years to complete.

It was previously reported that the President’s inner circle has already prepared a draft law regarding the local elections in the Donbas.

Germany, Poland and France have insisted on the adoption of an electoral law in the Donbas.
