A new bill condemning Russian aggression in Ukraine was submitted to the U.S. Congress

A bill supporting Ukraine and the further deterrence of Russian aggression was submitted to the U.S. Congress on February 2 by Eliot Engel, the representative of the Democratic Party. A link to the document has been published on the website of Congress under the number H.R. 830.

Though the text of the bill itself has not been published, it makes reference to its content: "deter, respond and stop the Russian aggression in Ukraine, help Ukraine's democratic transformation." The document will be discussed in several committees including the Committee on Foreign Affairs, the House Financial Services Committee and the Judiciary Committee.

A similar draft law "On the support of stability and democracy in Ukraine'' or the STAND for Ukraine Act was approved by the House of Representatives on September 22, 2016. The act meant to consolidate at the legislative level the restrictive measures imposed by the U.S. against Russia for the next five years in connection with the illegal annexation of the Crimea.

The STAND for Ukraine Act did not become law in 2016 as the Senate did not have time to consider it before the end of the year. However, the new law should also be approved by both houses of Congress.
