Media: Information leak led to the recent death of Russian General in Syria

The death of Russian General Valery Asapov in Syria is attributed to an information leak on his whereabouts to militants of the terrorist group Islamic State, Russia’s RIA Novosti news agency reports citing its source in the Syrian security services.

According to the source, this is confirmed by an investigation conducted by the Syrian authorities.

"The results of the preliminary investigation into the death of General Asapov in Deir ez-Zor revealed a leak of information about his whereabouts to the enemy which conducted the shelling", said the RIA Novosti’s source.

He also added that the investigation was still ongoing.

On Sunday, the Russian Ministry of Defense confirmed the death of Lt.-Gen. Valery Asapov as a result of mortar shelling near Deir ez-Zor.

Later, Sergey Ryabkov, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russian Federation, stated that the death of the general is the price Russia pays for two-faced American policy in Syria.
