Massive explosion rocks Syrian Shayrat airbase

A massive explosion rocked Syrian Shayrat airbase in the Homs province. According to the Syrian News Agency SANA, the cause of the incident was “a technical fault”.

According to Syrian sources, about 30 Syrian soldiers, including army officers, were killed.

However, other sources report that "the explosion occurred due to an error while handling outdated weapons".

The Syrian media stress that the incident is not a terrorist attack.

The Shayrat airport is a strategically important base for the Syrian government.

In 2017, the United States carried out the missile strike on Shayrat air base in response to the gas attack on the town of Khan Sheikhun that killed more than 80 people.
