US State Department Secretary: Nord Stream 2 undermines European security

Washington and Warsaw share the common view that the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project undermines Europe's security and energy stability and gives Russia an instrument of political pressure, stated Secretary of State Rex Tillerson during a joint press conference with the Polish Foreign Minister Jacek Czaputowicz held on Saturday, January 27 in Warsaw.

"Like Poland, the United States opposes the Nord Stream 2 pipeline. We see it as undermining Europe’s overall energy security and stability, and it provides Russia yet another tool to politicize energy as a political tool," Tillerson said.
He stressed that this resistance to the Nord stream-2 is driven by "mutual strategic interest."

"We strongly believe that Poland having the means – as well as all of Europe – to diversify its energy supplies is important to Europe’s long-term security, and we support many initiatives to develop interconnecting infrastructure to achieve that," the US Secretary of State stressed.

Earlier, President of Poland Andrzej Duda said that Nord Stream-2 jeopardizes European energy security.
