UN General Assembly postpones debate on Russian troops in Transdniestria
The UN General Assembly has indefinitely postponed debate on the issue of the complete withdrawal of Russian troops and weapons from the territory of the Transdniestrian region of Moldova, as reported by the the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Moldova, citing UN Spokesperson Brenden Varma.
"Based on a statement received from the delegates, the General Assembly has postponed the decision to include the topic of the complete withdrawal of Russian troops from the territory of the Republic of Moldova on the agenda. This issue will be considered at a future meeting of the Committee," Varma stated.
It had been previously planned for the topic of the withdrawal of Russian troops from the territory of unrecognized Transdniestria to be discussed on October 23.
The need to include this issue on the agenda of the General Assembly was first stated by the Representative of Moldova to the United Nations, Victor Moraru, then by the Prime Minister of the country Pavel Filip during his speech at the plenary session of the General Assembly. Philip said that the illegal presence of Russian troops not only threatens national and regional security, but also contradicts the constitutional neutrality of Moldova.
A group of Russian troops (about 1,400 servicemen) is stationed on the territory of the unrecognized Transdniestria, and more than 20,000 tons of ammunition are stored at the military depots at the village of Kolbasna in the Rybnitsa district.
