International Court of Justice demands explanation from Russia for not complying with court’s ruling on Crimean Tatar Mejlis

The International Court of Justice in The Hague officially requested Russia to explain its failure to comply with last year’s ruling of the court, Ukraine’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Olena Zerkal, said.

Evropeyska Pravda news outlet reports that the The Hague Court asks Russia to explain how it complies with the rling of the International Court, on resumption of the Mejlis activities. Specifically, Russia must explain what was done to create normal conditions for activities of the Crimean-Tatar organization in the Crimea.

“It is because Russia has not done anything to implement the order of the Court in the course of the year,” Zerkal explained. “The only thing we heard is ‘we are taking necessary measures,’ although the previous measures determined by the Court required immediate reaction.”

Zerkal is convinced that Russia continues to ignore the demands of the International Court, which should are legally binding.

“The court also offered Ukraine an opportunity to provide information regarding this issue,” Zerkal added. “We will inform the Court of all efforts made to implement the order of the Court, both by the State and representative of Mejlis.”

in April last year,The International Courtof Justice made a decision regarding Ukraine’s lawsuit against Russia on the resumption of activities of Mejlis of the Crimean-Tatar people in the Crimea.
