Russia promises to continue military operation in Syria

At a UN international media seminar, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova confirmed that Russia intends to continue the "fight against terrorism in Syria". According to her, Russia’s own security is at stake.

“We have killed, are killing and will continue to kill terrorists… And it doesn’t matter whether it’s Aleppo, Idlib or other locations in Syria. Peace must be brought back to Syria,” she stated.

The Foreign Ministry spokeswoman emphasized that it is not just a matter of regional security, asserting that the destruction of terrorist structures in Syria helps to ensure the security of Russia itself. “It’s not just a matter of our position, because we just want the region to live in peace and quiet. At the end of the day, we are talking about sovereign countries. This is a matter of our security,” she commented.

On September 4, the Russian Air Forces struck rebel positions in Syria’s Idlib Governorate. According to the Russian Defense Ministry, the aircraft destroyed warehouses and arsenals belonging to the terrorist group Al-Nusra Front. At the same time, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and the Turkish news agency Anadolu reported that the strike had targeted regiments of the Syrian opposition.

Commenting on the actions of the Russian Air Forces, Turkey’s Foreign Ministry called them a mistake, an extreme escalation of the tension in Idlib. “The goal of the attack is to capture Idlib. This bears a serious risk, it will be a catastrophe in all respects,” Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu warned.
