Russia promises responding to Poland over demolition of Soviet monuments
Russian ambassador to Poland, Sergey Andreyev, discussed the measures to be taken by Moscow against Warsaw in response to the demolition of Soviet-era monuments dedicated to soldiers and liberators, the Izvestia newspaper reports.
According to Andreyev, the most appropriate response in this situation would be to raise the world's awareness about the policy and conduct of the Polish authorities.
“This is the purpose of the protests which we bring on each occasion to Poland. We constantly bring up this issue at the international venues such as the UN, OSCE and the Council of Europe. We cannot forget or forgive this, not now and not in the future…” Andreyev said.
At the same time, Andreyev said that as long as Poland continues to deny a liberating mission of the Red Army during the Second World War no common ground could possibly be created for discussion of the existing problems.
On October 21st, the law on the demolition of Soviet monuments as part of the decommunization of the country came into effect in Poland. According to preliminary estimates, the law will affect more than 200 monuments to the soldiers of the Red Army.
