Russia prevents adoption of resolution on ceasefire in Syria
The UN Security Council was unable to adopt a resolution for a 30-day ceasefire in Syria. Due to Russia’s position, voting on the measure was not held on Thursday, February 22nd.
The permanent representative of Moscow in the Security Council, Vasily Nebenzya, made it clear that he would not vote for the resolution submitted by Sweden and Kuwait, and proposed a number of changes to the document.
Since Russia has the right of veto and can block any resolution of the UN Security Council, the Council’s chairman, the representative of Kuwait Mansour al-Otaibi, postponed the meeting on this issue.
Previously, the State Department said that Russia is not interested in ending the conflict in Syria and has not complied with the agreements reached with the U.S. in this area.
