Party of Moldovan President Dodon begins collecting signatures for transition to Presidential Republic

On September 24, the Party of Socialists of the Republic of Moldova (PSRM) organized the first anti-government action since the victory of its leader Igor Dodon in the presidential elections last fall.

As reported by NewsMaker news agency, this was the day that an advisory referendum on expanding the powers of the head of state could be held, which was initiated by Dodon in the spring. His decree was later annulled by the Constitutional Court of Moldova.

Socialists staged protest marches in three cities: Balti, Cahul and Anenii Noi. As the newspaper notes, they talked about the need for early parliamentary elections and the transition from a parliamentary to a presidential form of government.
In conclusion, the PSRM announced the collection of signatures supporting the transition to a presidential form of government and for “empowering the president of the country with the function of the head of the executive branch.”

“As part of this campaign, representatives of the Socialist Party will go to every house and every apartment, giving every citizen the opportunity to express his or her opinion about who should rule the country - the people or a gang of usurpers. They forbid a referendum, so we will hold it in every house,” the Socialists summed up.

A few days ago, members of the Parliament of Moldova from the Liberal Party began collecting signatures in support of a bill to begin the procedure of removing President Igor Dodon. The reason for announcing plans to impeach the president is, first of all, his refusal to send Moldovan soldiers to participate in international military exercises. He is also accused of promoting Russia’s interests in Moldova.
