Ukrainian president points out threats from Nord Stream 2 in discussion with French prime minister

In Paris, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and French Prime Minister Édouard Philippe discussed the development of trade and economic cooperation and renewable energy projects, the press service of the President of Ukraine reported.

The Ukrainian president’s press service noted that the two politicians agreed to activate the Ukraine-France Intergovernmental Commission on Economic Matters.

“Petro Poroshenko and Édouard Philippe discussed the prospects of French companies entering the Ukrainian market for the development of renewable energy. The head of state drew the French prime minister’s attention to the threats to Europe’s energy security which the realization of the Nord Stream 2 gas supply project would entail,” the announcement states.

The French prime minister in turn “remarked on the depth of the Ukrainian reforms which were facilitating the improvement of the investment climate”.

Poroshenko brought up the topic of Nord Stream 2 previously, while commenting on the results of his trip to the US.

“This is an extremely serious threat to Ukraine, created by Russia, the goal of which is by no means economic or energy related. The goal is to deprive Ukraine of the $2 billion it receives for transit. This is revenge for Stockholm, this is revenge for the decisive anti-corruption reforms, and the US showed us total support, which was pledged in the decision made during the Ukrainian delegation’s visit,” the president noted.
