Two Russians were sentenced to deportation from the United States for illegal export of technologies

Two Russians citizens, Dmitry Karpenko and Alexey Krutilin, who were arrested for illegally exporting technology from the US to Russia, were sentenced to deportation, as indicated in the decision of the Eastern District Court in New York, as reported by a TASS correspondent from inside the courtroom.

Attorney Richard Levitt, who defended the interests of the Russians in court, told RBC that his clients were satisfied with the verdict and would not appeal. He also explained why Karpenko came to court on crutches. According to the attorney, the Russian was injured doing sports in prison.

In early March, Karpenko and Krutilin plead guilty to the illegal export of technology from the United States. As stated in the case documentation, both of them confessed their guilt on only one count. The court “considered their statement to be deliberate, voluntary, factually grounded” and accepted it for further consideration.

Russian citizens Dmitry Karpenko and Alexey Krutilin, along with US citizen Alexey Baryshev, were arrested on October 6, 2016 on charges of exporting technologies to Russia.

According to the information provided during the hearing, Baryshev had two companies registered in New York, which bought and exported technologies, yet it is still unclear who the technology buyer was, as the addressee was hidden. US law enforcement found that Karpenko and Krutilin agreed with Baryshev to receive American-made microelectronic products in order to send them to Russia. At the same time, the participants colluded to send the technologies and bypass US regulations and agencies that monitor the export of high-tech products.

Microelectronics, which the group exported to Russia, among other things, can be used in for military purposes, for example, in radars and missile guidance systems.
