The US State Department suspects Russia of violating UN Security Council Resoltuion

Reuters reports that Russia’s use of an Iranian military base for launching attacks against positions of Islamic State militants may contradict resolution number 2231 of the UN Security Council, according to State Department spokesman Mark Toner.

Toner noted that the USA continues to explore data about the Hamadan Air Base. He stressed that the use of the base in Iran will not prevent the USA and Russia from reaching an agreement on the common fight against terrorist groups in Syria.

The resolution regulates nuclear deals between the international community and Iran.

On 11 March 2016, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree "On measures to implement UN Security Council resolutions.” One of the paragraphs states that until 18 October 2020, each case requires the prior consent of the UN Security Council for the supply, sale or direct or indirect transfer of combat vehicles from the territory of the Russian Federation.

On August 16th, it became known that Russia’s long-range Tu-22M3 bombers arrived at Hamadan base in Iran to conduct air strikes on militant positions.
