The Seimas of Lithuania proposed taking the Kaliningrad region from Russia
Linas Balsys, the former press secretary of the Lithuanian President, has become a member of the Seimas and has suggested that the issue of Kaliningrad be raised again, as he stated on 20 January during the conference “The World in 2017” in Vilnius, BaltNews.lt. writes.
According to a parliamentarian, Kaliningrad was not given to Russia forever. Now Lithuania or the leadership of the European Union should address its return, or it should be done as a joint effort.
“During talks in both Potsdam and Helsinki, Kaliningrad was not given to Russia for perpetual use…. It was said that we will give it to the USSR administration until the final peace treaty is signed in Europe,” Balsys stated.
At the same time he noted that Russia itself violated the rules of inviolability of borders. “The annexation of the Crimea (an accusation of which the Russian Federation denies, stating the peninsula was a voluntary integration into the Russian Federation) has shown that the post-war order in Europe is coming to an end. Because Russia has violated the rule of the inviolability of borders,” the Member of Parliament said.
At the economic forum in Vladivostok in September, Vladimir Putin noted that attempts to revise the global order following World War II can lead to unpredictable results. “And I can tell you seriously, if someone wants to revise the results of World War II, let’s discuss this, but then we will have to discuss not only Kaliningrad, but the eastern lands of Germany, Lviv, which was a part of Poland, etc.,” the Russian leader stated, as reported by Klops.ru.
