Sweden suspects Russian hackers of attacking news websites

The websites of several Swedish newspapers were attacked on Saturday evening, and their systems were completely brought down, Radio Svoboda reported.

Two minutes before the attack, an anonymous message appeared on Twitter, stating that the attack was aimed at the Swedish Government, as well as the media that “disseminates misleading propaganda”. Immediately after the message was posted, the websites of the Aftonbladet, Expressen, Dagens Nyheter, Svenska Dagbladet, Dagens Industri, Sydsvenskan Helsingborgs Dagblad were taken offline.

According to the preliminary results of an investigation of the National Operative Department of the Police of Stockholm and the Swedish Security Service (SÄPO), the attack may have originated from computers in Russia.

The Minister of Internal affairs of Sweden, Anders Igeman, informed the Government about the incident, and expressed his concern over the attacks, stating it was an attempt to muzzle the freedom of the press.
