Russian special forces carry out military exercises in Crimea

In Russia, the Special Forces division of the Southern Military District has begun the active phase of military exercises which also take place in the annexed Crimea, Interfax-AVN reported, citing Colonel Vadim Astafiev, representative of the Southern Military District.

“According to the plan of the exercises, the combined units of Special Forces (a convoy of Typhoon and Tigr armored vehicles as well as paratroopers landing from military transport planes) have arrived at the task execution areas at the training grounds of the Krasnodar region and the Republic of the Crimea. The distance from the points of permanent deployment was more than 500 km”, the Russian colonel noted.

According to him, at the training grounds the Special Forces carried out search and discovery as well as determining and transmitting coordinates of hypothetical enemy targets for air strikes.

The groups’ actions were monitored in real-time by a subdivision of drones.

Altogether more than 450 military personnel were involved in the exercises, and upwards of 100 units of special equipment were utilized.

Previously Russia began frontline aviation exercises in Crimea. Su-24 M bombers and Su-25 M and Su-25 SM fighter planes were engaged.

Earlier in March, Russia rehearsed paratrooper landing during exercises in the Crimea. The Russian soldiers learned how to capture and defend bridgeheads.
