Russia сonsiders imposing sanctions against Poland in response to decision to demolish Soviet monuments
The Federation Council of Russia appealed to President Vladimir Putin with a request to instruct the relevant Russian departments to develop sanctions “in response to Poland’s decision to demolish monuments to Soviet soldiers.”
This was reported by Interfax, citing the appeal of the Russian senators.
“We ask you to instruct the relevant federal executive bodies to submit comprehensive proposals on the possible introduction of restrictive measures in the areas of bilateral cooperation with the Republic of Poland, as well as towards Polish parliamentarians, who initiated of the law of April 1, 2016 on the prohibition of communist propaganda or other totalitarian regimes as well as other individuals and legal entities,” the appeal states.
The document notes that the Polish Parliament adopted amendments to legislation which provide for the demolition of monuments and memorials related to the time of Soviet control in the so-called “socialist camp” of countries. Included in this are monuments to servicemen of the Red Army, who died there in 1944-1945.
According to the law enacted in Poland, only monuments that are clearly agitating can be taken down. Monuments in burial places and cemeteries will remain untouched and will continue to be cared for.
