Russia sends another frigate carrying cruise missiles to the Mediterranean

The newest frigate of the Black Sea Fleet, Admiral Essen, entered the Mediterranean Sea and joined the Russian navy group off the Syrian coast, as stated by the representative of the Russian Navy,Vyacheslav Trukhachev, Interfax news agency reports.

"Today, the newest frigate of the Black Sea Fleet, Admiral Essen, which has been on its inter-fleet voyage from the Baltic to the Black Sea Fleet passed the Strait of Gibraltar and arrived in the Mediterranean Sea. The warship has joined the permanent Navy group in this remote operational zone," said Trukhachev.

According to him, two new similar class warships from Black Sea fleets, Admiral Grigorovich and Admiral Essen, are currently carrying out tasks as part of the naval group in the Mediterranean Sea.

Admiral Essen began its voyage from the Baltic Sea to the Mediterranean on April 28. It was built in July 2011 in the Baltic Shipbuilding plant as the second ship of Project 11356. It is equipped with Kalibr-NK cruise missiles systems.

Admiral Grigorovich is the main ship of Project 11356. It is also equipped with Kalibr cruise-missile.

In November 2016, Admiral Grigorovich launched cruise missile strikes on the targets in Syria.
