Republicans and Democrats in US Congress agree on broader sanctions against Russia

Representatives of the US Congress announced on Saturday that a group of Republican and Democratic legislators of both chambers had reached an agreement on new sanctions against the Russian regime.

According to CNN and the Associated Press, this is a new, much broader package of measures designed to deter Moscow from secret interference in the US electoral system, as well as a US reaction to the continued activity of the Russian government in military conflicts in Ukraine and Syria

The second-in-command among Democrats in the House of Representatives, Maryland congressman Steny Hoyer, explained that the sanctions against Russia are part of a new bill that also provides for sanctions against Iran and North Korea.

However, the package of anti-Russian measures has caused the most attention and controversy, as it is at odds with President Donald Trump's attempts to establish more friendly relations with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.

The White House administration has opposed the article of the draft legislation, requiring that any presidential decree that facilitates or eliminates sanctions against the Kremlin first be reviewed by Congress.

Yahoo News analysts note that Republicans and Democrats on the Capitol have unexpectedly found common ground in the fact that both express dissatisfaction with the sympathy shown by the head of the White House towards the authority figure in the Kremlin. For the same reason, the veto that President Trump can impose on the bill is likely to be overcome by the current composition of Congress.

Observers are now saying the law on new sanctions could even be passed before the members of both houses leave for summer recess, the beginning of which has already been postponed by the republican majority in an attempt to work its health care reform through Congress.
