Polish Foreign Minister: Russia violates international norms more than USSR did

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Poland, Witold Waszczykowski, stated that Warsaw was very wrong when it thought that Russia would conduct its policy in line with international norms, as stated in a report, published on the website of the Polish Foreign Ministry.

Witold Waszczykowski assured that Poland’s critical attitude towards Russia derives not only from their complicated history but also from a sober assessment of the revisionist tendencies of the Russian Federation.

“In the 1990s, we tended to believe that the new Russia would conduct its foreign policy in accordance with international norms and values,” the Foreign Minister noted. “However, in recent years, when Russia went further in violating OSCE principles, the UN Charter, and international standards than the USSR has proved that we were wrong,” Waszczykowski stated.

In addition, according to the Minister, maintaining prospects of EU membership, or close relations with the EU, is the most efficient use of influence. As an example, Witold Waszczykowski drew attention to the situation in Ukraine, where the European aspirations of that country have faced flagrant opposition from Russia.
