Moscow City Court upholds extension of house arrest for Director of the Library of Ukrainian Literature

The Moscow City Court found the house arrest extension for the Director of the Library of Ukrainian Literature, Natalia Sharina, to be legal. Sharina is accused of embezzlement and extremism, as reported by attorney, Ivan Pavlov.

“The Judicial Board dismissed our appeal and the extension of house arrest was found legal,” 112.ua quoted Pavlov as saying. Earlier, the Presnensky Court upheld the extension of the house arrest for Sharina until 29th of July.

In October 2015, a search of the Library of Ukrainian Literature in Moscow was conducted. After that, Natalia Sharina was detained. One hundred fifty books and brochures were seized.

According to the Investigative Committee, a criminal proceeding was initiated against the Director of the Library of Ukrainian Literature under Article 282 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (incitement of ethnic hatred and hostility, and diminution of human dignity).

The dissemination of an article written by Dmitry Korchinskiy to visitors of the library became the reason for the initiation of the criminal proceeding. This publication was recognized as extremist and prohibited by the Court. Later, she was charged with embezzlement. Natalia Sharina denies her guilt.
