Moldovan government warns its officials against traveling to Russia

The Moldovan government has recommended officials to refrain from traveling to Russia due to searches of the officials at Russian border crossings, as reported by RIA Novosti.

"It was decided to convey this official note to the leadership of Russia, in which they are asked to take urgent measures to stop these abuses of authority. The Russian ambassador was informed that until this problem is resolved, Moldovan officials will be asked to refrain from traveling to the Russian Federation,” the report said.

The President of Moldova, Igor Dodon, in his turn, opposed this recommendation. "The decision to prohibit state officials from traveling to Russia is inappropriate. There may have been some disruptions, just like we have on the border, but that does not justify a recommendation that could spoil the good relations that we have started building with Russia," he wrote on his Facebook page. He added that he would continue to travel to Russia to strengthen relations with Moscow.

Earlier on March 9, representatives of the Moldovan government and parliament, while at a meeting with the Russian ambassador, handed over a note in which they complained about the actions of representatives of security services against Moldovan officials entering Russia. The document states that "officials are stopped at the entrance to the Russian Federation, interrogated, searched, and humiliated by representatives of the Special Services."
