Media: Russian spies are becoming more active in Sweden
Media sources recently reported on alleged Russian spies and the advocacy against Swedish servicemen. “Such incidents related to security happen every week,” stated Mikael Frisell, the Head of the Northern Military District of Sweden. One piece of information that drew special attention was about the incident that took place in Lulea, a coastal city in Swedish Lapland where Russians threatened a NATO officer at the local bar, demanding information about military drills that were held at that time.
The still-unidentified Russians blackmailed the NATO officer, showing him photographs taken of his own family. “The purpose of these actions was to affect us and our people. By this they wanted to show that Russian spies are there and they know and see what we do,” Frisell said. The Swedish Military Command called on all servicemen to be more vigilant because of the growing the number of incidents that demonstrate Russian spy activity in the territory of the country.
Despite the Swedish authorities’ revelations about the growing Russian threat, information about the nature of the threat remains classified.
