Media: repairs to Russian aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov to cost almost $700 million
Four boilers of the primary power unit will be replaced during repairs to the Russian aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov. The Granit missile system will most likely remain on the ship as before. The cost of upgrading could amount to as much as 40 billion rubles ($700 million), a source familiar with the situation told Interfax news agency.
The source pointed out that the Granit system will not be replaced “due to financial reasons”. As for the boilers of the primary power unit, two of the four have already been made at the Baltic factory.
“The radiolocation, radio-electric weaponry and aviation and navigation systems will also be upgraded,” the source noted.
According to him, it is still unclear where the repairs, including the modernization of the carrier, will take place, and when it will begin.
The source mentioned that aircraft carrier is currently in Murmansk, at the 35th ship-repair factory, but it is currently necessary to observe regulations in order to receive permission to conduct flights from the ship. The Admiral Kuznetsov, with its air contingent on board, may provisionally be able to set out to sea at the start of fall, the source believes.
