Lithuania approves an updated national security strategy
On Tuesday, Lithuanian Parliament approved an updated strategy of national security, as reported by Delfi news agency. 107 members of Seimas voted in favor of the document. No one was against it. One person abstained.
14 threats and risk factors are listed in the strategy. The updated National Security project was prepared by the previous administration. The strategy was last reviewed in 2012 and was planned to be adapted to the changed situation.
Conventional military threat was the first priority. It is presented by "the preparation and will of the Russian Federation to use military means to achieve its goals, as well as concentration and development of its military capabilities near the Lithuanian Republic.”
Concealed servicemen and intelligence means used by foreign states and which can be used for negative impact on the political system on Lithuania, its military power, law-enforcement authorities, social and economic stability, etc. are number two in the list of threats.
Third place goes to threats to the unity of the Euro-Atlantic community: processes of general and regional nature, activities of third countries which can weaken euro-Atlantic relations, NATO commitments on collective defense, and the possibility of the European Union to implement unified policies.
The list of threats also includes instability in the region and the world, terrorism, extremism, radicalization, informational and cyber threats, economic and energy dependence, vulnerability of the economy, social and regional exclusion, demographic crisis, organized crime, corruption, and extreme scenarios at the national and international levels.
